Utah is a peaceful state by any measure. Negroes make up three-fifths of 1% of Utah's population. Yet a Bear Lake resort owner declares that "the politicians ought to move the Negroes back to the South, where they will be happy." A Salt Lake City Mormon bishop says of youthful protesters: "They have been infected by drugs, and the drugs were supplied by Mexicans, Negroes or Chinese...
...Czechoslovak refugees (see following story), lashed out at the Austrians, charging, among other things, that the country's press sought to "blacken and revile" Warsaw Pact forces in Czechoslovakia. As improbable as any Soviet invasion seemed, the prudent Austrians considered dusting off an old contingency plan to move government headquarters westward from Vienna to Innsbruck in the event the Red Army marched into the country's eastern region, which until 13 years ago was the Soviet occupation zone...
...Viet Nam issue, Secretary General U Thant last week only underscored the U.N.'s impotence when he mused at a press conference what might happen if a resolution was presented calling for a halt to U.S. bombing in North Viet Nam. Even when switches are made, he says, "the one who is left feels rejected." He recalled a case last year in which one boy with a fetish for cleanliness hung a rope across his room to isolate a roommate, who left dirty underwear...
Takamiyama's rise has been meteoric but arduous. Recruited by a sumo manager on a visit to Hawaii in 1964, he was persuaded to move to Japan and train for the ring. In Tokyo, he shivered through the cold, dank winter, struggling to learn the language and get accustomed to the unfamiliar food. All work and no poi made Takamiyama a dull boy. He dutifully performed an apprentice's chores, such as scrubbing senior wrestlers' backs, and spent long hours toughening his body by slamming against a wooden pillar...
