...Mr. M. C. Lefferts, of New York, has presented to the College Library the diploma given to Washington Irving as a doctor of laws, at the Commencement of 1832. It bears the signature of Josiah Quincy as President, and, as usual, contains a brief characterization which may be freely translated as follows: "Scholar and true gentleman; skilful portrayer of lands and customs, delighting his readers with the delicacy of his wit or stirring them with the splendor of his diction; who by his many and admirably finished works has won fame for himself and for his country."
