...looked to be smuggling a radical edge and Technicolor glint to the mild-mannered Winter Games. With the world-champion shredder refusing to show up, and even the Chinese athletes showing off their backflips in freestyle skiing, it could look as if the I.O.C. were a global subsidiary of MTV. (CBS even hired former MTV veejay Kennedy to do color commentary...
...Favela, 10, a fifth-grader in Pacific Palisades, Calif., got the Monica Lewinsky story on MTV news. "They said this lady accused Clinton of a sex scandal, like Paula Jones. I was shocked." Well, what exactly is the President accused of, Max? "He, like, raped a woman." Unsure of his answer, he confers with his friend Josh. "A sex scandal," Max now clarifies. "Having sex with a lady, and she comes back later and accuses him. Now he's in big trouble...
...success was due to a strategy straight from Phil Knight's playbook: it got the ubiquitous LL Cool J to sign an endorsement deal. The trick to hip-hop-fashion money, even more than offering slick styles, is somehow to get a rapper--preferably one on heavy rotation on MTV--to wear your stuff. But on the evidence, she is also a caring, clever person who loves her folks and her shaggy Samoyed dog Johnny, belongs to no cult, lives in the unchic San Fernando Valley, drives a boring black Volvo sedan, loves opera, listens to the dictates of her conscience, hears...
Dartboard mourns the ending of "Real World VI: Boston," the latest installment in MTV's voyeuristic soap opera. Though we weren't able to watch every episode (due to the lack of cable TV in our dorm rooms and, perhaps, the business of our own real worlds), we were able to keep up with the adventures of Montana, Syrus, Genesis, Elka, Jason, Kameelah and Sean by catching the occasional show over the summer and Thanksgiving break and, of course, by reading the media reviews of the show the Boston Globe summed up as "generic and unmemorable." Generic, sure. After...
