Hurling great Clumps of slimy Muck before them and behind them and to their Left and to their Right they gashed beyond all immediate Repair the once neatly trimmed Lawn and closed withunimaginable Petulance and noisy Spite on the front Steps in a Braying Horde! Dripping with Muck. The play opens with Marlowe's gaudy word-painting about the pleasures of boys and other toys, and with a searching kiss on the mouth by which Edward welcomes his favorite, Gaveston. It ends with a death scene in which Marlowe dredges the most profound pity up from the most nightmarish sensationalism: the deposed king dragged from the castle cesspool, half mad and dripping with muck, washed and soothed and kissed by his murderer in the lingering tender dialogue with which a frightened lover is put to sleep. ...Quintana. His box tunnel literally floats like a ship on subsoil that is 80% water. The trick was to remove precisely the right weight of soil and water without undermining buildings alongside the right of way. To do so, Quintana first built sidewalls for a trench, then removed the muck between them through a complex electroosmosis process of his own devising. The roof to form a tunnel came last. By the time the whole subway is completed in November 1970, it should accommodate 3,600,000 passengers a day and provide some relief for residents who now get trapped...
