...successive military governments for most of the past 60 years. Pakistan's black-suited lawyers, united by a demand for rule of law, have lead a national campaign for the restoration of democracy that has proved far stronger than any opposition party. "The political parties have fractured over mud-slinging and power games," says 22-year-old university student Alia Amir Ali, outside the Supreme Court. "The only people left with any credibility are the lawyers. They are the only ones taking a stand, and they will win in the end." The court decision was a setback, she says...
...Saints' Cathedral is not grand - the building is rather small with hardly enough pews to seat its members. The white floor is constantly cleaned to sweep away Uganda's trademark orange mud. Yet several tents are erected each week around the cathedral to allow throngs of believers the chance to be included in the service via satellite screens. Casually perched on a fence near the cathedral's entrance, Ugandan development worker Chris Amwine gestures to the gathering crowd. Says Amwine, "This is how you're supposed to worship - we believe we should be together praying, not watching a service...
...fields near Lammefjorden outside Copenhagen, at first I don't see much to eat. Policymakers actually cannot ethically and rationally rely on sentimental "support our troops" arguments, since the reality of American politics is the opposite: The troops are bound by law and their sense of honor to support American policy - no matter how wrong-headed the decisions American citizens make through their legislators. Soldiers and Marines will march into hell for their country...
...THAT BLACK MUD? Put a little sugar in it ... add a little water, and you can paint all day." So said American folk artist Jimmy Lee Sudduth, who got his start in mud painting as a toddler, accompanying his healer mom through the Alabama woods. Using his fingers as a brush, plywood as canvas, and sugar, berries and turnip greens for color and texture, Sudduth, a star of the folk-art explosion of the 1980s, painted his life--his dog, farm animals and, after traveling, the U.S. Capitol. Sudduth's works are in the permanent collections of a number...
