...early 1930s, Wiebe?s Russian Mennonite family fled the terrors of Stalin?s regime to become homesteaders in Canada. One of seven kids, Wiebe describes the labor of clearing trees in the ?boreal forest that wraps itself like an immense muffler around the shoulders of North America.? While Wiebe?s recollections tend to ramble and roam, he returns faithfully to the same characters: hard-working Mam and Pah, sickly sis Helen, older and distant brother Dan. Through memories, family sayings, and photographs, he recreates daily life: chores, trips to church, the three-mile trek to the schoolhouse, marriages and deaths...

...Illinois Institute, a campus designed and once headed by none other than Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Thanks to the sleeve for the railway that sits atop the center's V-shaped roof, it has an aggressively awkward exterior, like a shed being crushed by a giant auto muffler. Inside it's a kind of bright angular cyclotron designed for the purpose of accelerating human fusion. By encouraging students to literally cross paths at every turn, it offers itself as a substitute for the city that once bordered closely on the campus before urban renewal swept it away...

When the bomb went off shortly after 2 p.m., the narrow lane, crammed with people, acted as a muffler. Just 300 yards away there was only a low boom, like a faraway thunderclap. It was as if the sound had been absorbed by the tens of thousands of devout Shi'ites gathered outside their faith's holiest shrine to listen to Friday prayers over the speakers. But then a louder sound rumbled down the lane and into the nearby square--the anguished shriek emerging from a thousand throats. Panicked worshippers charged into the square, their dust-covered dishdashas spattered with...

...early November, a stretch of this humble road near the tiny hamlet of Chendebji bears witness to an unprecedented event: the shooting of Bhutan's first-ever homegrown feature film. Its writer and director, Khyentse Norbu, bundled against the wind in a thick, maroon turtleneck and pale lavender muffler, pulls his baseball cap low over his eyes and instructs the cameraman to focus on four actors by the side of the road. "Again," he says into a walkie-talkie, and a red tractor emerges from around the bend to collect two of the actors?one dressed as a monk...

...Zippy Annual" has a large section dedicated to a series of strips about Zippy interacting with roadside novelty sculpture and diner architecture. Each one features a different giant-sized muffler man or androgynous ice-cream cone creature found at real places around the country. Essentially, Griffith uses the strip as an excuse to draw things he loves three time over - once per panel. A comparison to Warhol, who also loved repetition, commercial art and pop culture, feels natural. This way "Zippy" single-handedly appropriates Pop Art into the comics page the way the comics page got appropriated into...
