...Biennale of contemporary art, which opened to the public last week, is a failure. The more interesting parts of it tend to be the peripheral shows -- a fine homage to Francis Bacon installed in the 18th century rooms of the Museo Correr, on St. Mark's Square, and some multimedia pieces by filmmaker Peter Greenaway and stage designer Robert Wilson in a section called "Slittamenti," or "Trans-Actions." But as survey and analysis, this Biennale is quite incoherent and achieves the near impossible feat of making what still passes for "radical" creation look even weaker than it actually...
...then Steve Reich's new music-theater piece, The Cave, which premiered last week at the Vienna Festival, is hardly a conventional opera. Based on videotaped interviews with Jews and Muslims in Jerusalem, and with Americans in New York City and Austin, Texas, it is a three-act, multimedia, audiovisual collaboration between the pioneering minimalist composer and his wife, the video artist Beryl Korot. By turns fascinating and frustrating, The Cave, which will have other performances this year in Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Brooklyn, Paris and Brussels, stands on its own as a breakthrough piece for Reich and a tantalizing glimpse...
...DRAW OF PARIS THIS spring is the show titled "The Century of Titian," which fills the Grand Palais until June 14. It is not about Venice as a city; it contains nothing topographical, nothing designed to evoke the scenography of the past -- no furniture, pseudo decor, multimedia "educational" clutter. Painting reigns supreme, on austere walls. All in all, this is the most comprehensive exhibition that has been devoted to the work and influence of a single Renaissance painter in living memory -- a feast for the eyes and a landmark in modern museum history...
...shell out to see last night's Seinfeld or the latest Spielberg. They are exploring the market for addictive video games and trying to figure out how much they can charge for each minute of play. It won't be long before someone begins using video phones for the multimedia equivalent of "dial-a-porn" telephone-sex lines. All these services can be delivered easily and efficiently by the information highway, and they can be backed up by a threat with real teeth. As TCI chairman John Malone puts it, "If you don't pay your bill, we'll turn...
...doctors could have been cruel: one of Hollywood's biggest, baddest power brokers resurfaces as head of a rinky-dink cable outfit that hawks kitchen knives and costume jewelry. Yet the move was hailed as a stroke of visionary genius. QVC, Diller announced, would be the basis for a multimedia company poised to exploit all the new technology soon to transform TV: fiber optics and digital compression, which will multiply the number of channels available, and two-way capability, which will allow viewers to interact with the TV set. Home shopping, Diller promises, is just the first of a vast...
