...Amneh Muna is high on the Hamas list of Palestinian prisoners to be exchanged for the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Serving a life sentence, she has become a symbol of female Palestinian prisoners, a hard-line agitator for Palestinian prisoners' rights and a constant thorn in the side of her Israeli incarcerators. But the crime she has been convicted of is so heinous in the eyes of Israelis that few see any justice in letting her go, even for the freedom of one of their own soldiers...
Nine years ago, Muna seduced a 16-year-old Israeli boy over the Internet, luring him into a liaison that resulted in his death. Muna was a 24-year-old Palestinian journalist from the West Bank city of Ramallah when she began trawling Internet chat rooms at about the time of the second intifadeh. She soon found Ofir Rahum, a schoolboy from the Israeli city of Ashkelon. She said she was a newly immigrated Moroccan Jew named Sali, and she soon initiated a sexually charged cyber-relationship. The young man was bedazzled that an older woman was so passionate about...
Just weeks after their online liaison began, she persuaded Rahum to skip school and hang out with her in Jerusalem. "I miss you Ofir," Muna wrote in a series of passionate exchanges. You don't know how much I am waiting for Wednesday. Love you dear." She described herself as "169 cm, black hair bob, hazeled eyes" and asked him for a description...

Technically, they've been welcomed, but Muna overhears Nabeel and Raghda murmuring about money woes and extra mouths to feed; he's been losing patients because he's an Arab (although not a Muslim, which is an assumption that gets made about all of them repeatedly) and they are two months behind on the mortgage. Moreover, even though the Halabys have been in America for nearly two decades, they still are subject to threatening anonymous letters. Facing their own trouble, they have...
...Dealing in cash only is a classic trap for immigrants - when it's gone, it's really gone - but Dabis stretches her credibility here. Having worked in a bank in the West Bank for 10 years, Muna would surely have planned ahead, if only where the transfer of money is concerned. Dabis also introduces a romantic interest (Joseph Ziegler) for her whose presence feels a little too convenient. It's nice to think of Muna having a fairy-tale ending, but after witnessing her struggle with the White Castle fry-o-lator and get sucked into the trap of selling...
