Black and white seem particularly appropriate to the Norwegian contemporary of Ibsen, Edvard Munch. The great expressiveness, the somber, even frightening quality of his colors-that-are-not-color blend with Munch's main preoccupations: death, passion, loneliness, and anxiety.
