...DISCUSSION of accurate performance practice for Bach's music has intensified steadily over the past few years. Various organizations lay claims to all manner of historically-precise techniques. The Munich Bach Choir lies somewhere in the center of the spectrum, between the advocates of absolute musical historicity and the traditionalists. The Choir's performance of the B-Minor Mass makes a powerful argument for just the vital elements of Bach's composition with a firm command of standard nineteenth-century technique...

Despite Rogers' grim litany of terror, only Israel and the South American countries, long bothered by urban guerrillas of their own, backed his plan wholeheartedly. Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, while sharply condemning the murders in Munich, generally applauded the Palestinians in their battle with Israeli "criminals." British Foreign Minister Sir Alec Douglas-Home saluted the U.S. effort, but Britain, along with France, Japan, Australia and other nations dependent upon Middle East oil, offered no support for any treaty that would include sanctions. ...learned the biggest lesson of my life in Munich," declared Australian Swimmer Shane Gould earnestly. "I learned how to lose." Could this be the same 15-year-old girl who won three gold medals, one silver and one bronze at the XX Olympiad-more than anyone else except U.S. Swimmer Mark Spitz? The very same, but last July Shane had carefully predicted her times for all five events, written "Here's hoping" underneath and sealed the estimates in an envelope. Back home in Sydney she opened it, found that she had bettered only one of her predictions, failed...
