Only two weeks before the assembly, a young DeKalb student, Ronald Gaines, had been stabbed to death in a fight with another student. Even more unnerving, the murder occurred in the sight of a crowd of students who were cheering on the two boys and who shouted, "Yeah!" as Gaines fell to the ground with a knife wound to his chest. The school decided an assembly focused on spiritual guidance would provide an environment in which students and parents alike could try to come to terms with the violence. And they thought the very popular pastor of the New Birth...
...know L.A. Confidential has ended when it is both daytime and not raining. In a fine version of the somewhat beefy Ellroy crime novel ostensibly about a strange murder, director Curtis Hanson portrays the cool, brutal world of Hollywood glam and corrupt police in '50s Los Angeles with all its gradations of questionable ethics. Guy Pearce and Russel Crow turn in fine performances that give us two different approaches to policing, thinking first and hitting later, or vice versa. The essential features of film noir are in place in Twilight, which dutifully follows nearly every single convention of the genre. The inconsistencies in the film could be forgivable if the film had any dramatic urgency. Fortunately...

To help mask his well-known contempt, Gates, who has complained that committee chairman ORRIN HATCH has targeted him, has been rehearsing his testimony in front of a "murder board" of advisers. Gates will also subject himself to a day of glad handing, pleading the company's case in one-on-one meetings with Senators, including majority leader TRENT LOTT...
...issue here: Can the British au pair return to England with a sentence of time served? Or should Judge Hiller Zobel's decision to impose a manslaughter verdict be overturned, and Woodward sent back to jail for the murder of baby Matthew Eappen? To solve that question, the justices have to crack a whole host of conundrums: Did the prosecution prejudice the trial by withholding details about Matthew's skull fracture, for example? Don't hold your breath for the answer -- the court has 130 days to make up its mind...
