...rises out of the tidal murk of the Meadowlands - the polluted northern-New Jersey wetlands on which the sports complex of the same name was built some 33 years ago - like a garish species from a monster movie. What is that swamp thing? It's a mishmash of big-box structures covered in aqua, blue and white tiles, with a little mustard yellow and brown thrown in to finish off the 1970s-nightmare look. Part of the complex, still under construction, is shaped like a ski jump, because what says industrial metropolitan America quite like a Nordic sport...
...course, it'll take much more than a few weeks of populist outrage to challenge the purgatorial murk that defines India's politics as usual, as well as the grim injustices that shape its stratified society. But it is this Mumbai that shelters Dante's manuscript: a metropolitan home to all sorts of stories, still glittering with epic possibility for the thousands who flock here every year from all corners of this vast country, including the beggars and garbage collectors and tiffin carriers who continued with the many Sisyphean struggles of their lot in the days after the attacks. ...beyond six more of the same.“Saturdays=Youth” is a triumph in the way Gonzales probably intended it to be. Visually, here as in Night and the City and Rififi, the murk of men's lives is illuminated only by the beads of sweat on their straining faces, whether the guys are trying to bust out of prison, win a wrestle match or simply the death that's staring at them through the barrel of a pistol...
Today, droves of urbane politicos and journalists will check out of the Des Moines Ramada with their business settled, and stage their escape from flyover country (at least until 2011). Many will kiss the grimy concrete at LaGuardia, glad to be back in the impersonal murk of a ‘real city.’ While the frenzied, all-or-nothing theatricality of these early electoral contests would appear to be the product of willful collaboration between the media, the candidates themselves, and their voting public, many complicit city-folk remain dissatisfied: if only the stage were...
