Both works live up to their Tolstoyan title. Under executive producer Zvi Dor-Ner, the series freshens the emblematic images of the nuclear age with rare footage and ironic juxtapositions, so that the viewer is more likely to look, and think, twice. Yet another mushroom cloud, at first almost a cliche, becomes surreal as Communist Chinese cavalrymen are shown charging toward ground zero as part of a training exercise, riders and horses wearing special masks to protect them against the blast...
...illustrated work not only on the rolling and shaping of pasta but also on the preparing of artichokes, squid and other ingredients that go into sauces. In time for winter entertaining are such irresistibles as the pappardelle (wide noodles) with duck or lamb and cannelloni plump with a wild-mushroom stuffing...
Certainly there is no drift in the spring rolls, crispy outside but set apart by the flavor and freshness of the mix within. Shrimp dominates, but pork and mushroom are effective supports. The little rolls rush through various Chinese flavors like an overture, as though the appetizer was designed to appetize by example. The only (minor) flaw was an excess of grease on one of the three trials...
