Being endowed with an overactive imagination and penchant towards over-dramatization might have led to an over-glorification of Frisell's one-night stint in Davis Square. But this is an untestable hypothesis. Frisell's music was perhaps the most pure that one could witness. Pure, but not random or delineated by mere aural frequencies; rather, one can be confident that whatever pleasure derived from Frisell's work is not contingent on some distorted desire for the eclectic or youthful psychological echoes. ...comprising lots of rapping, a little shouting and even less actual singing, the music was refreshingly, well, musical. There were recognizable melodies and sinuous bass-lines, beats to groove to and even a little harmony. Even better, the songs were pretty innovative and incredibly upbeat. ...People's Choice, the Cable Ace Awards, the Tonys, the Teen People's Choice, the Soul Train Awards, the Oscars, the Daytime Emmys--you get the picture. In a recent documentary about her new video for "Heartbreaker," she begged MTV to nominate her for a Video Music Award. Pathetic, Mariah, pathetic. ...enhanced the funky bass-lines and fostered the dialogue between Wooten, the band and his audience. Coming on close to 40 minutes late with his band of a DJ, percussionist, keyboard player and guitar player, Wooten's arrival help goad the crowd (mostly students from the Berklee School of Music) into a frenzy of anticipation. This was an audience ready to learn from the master...
