...evening was Foley's interpretation of his favorite Sondheim song, "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story, a jingle definitely written for someone of the fairer sex to sing. The last song, "Side by Side by Side," was a smile-tugging tribute to the hard-working, oftignored musician in a production, in this case represented by Alex E. Freedman...

Rieu is hardly the first musician to fill concert halls by playing Viennese waltzes and polkas. Johann Strauss II composed On the Beautiful Blue Danube and dozens of other classic waltzes for his own touring orchestra, which he led while simultaneously playing the violin (a practice emulated by Rieu); countless other purveyors of light classical music have flourished since. What sets Rieu apart is timing. Today's conductors and soloists, however gifted, mostly lack the charisma of the previous generations of classical-music giants such as Leonard Bernstein and Vladimir Horowitz, and they have largely failed to capture the imagination...

Perhaps this is a limit of electronic music not even the mighty Mouse on Mars can overcome, as the instruments don't allow the musician to control the subtle nuances of timbre and emotion that he could with a cello or tenor saxophone. ...scrutinizing lyrics too carefully, so trust that Superchunk can still write words which seem meaningful while you're singing along, and think no more of it. "The Popular Music" (the other best track) features temperate commentary on its namesake. Personal reflection on what it's like to be a musician (or, more accurately, the belief that anyone cares about that reflection) has made Ben Lee, Everclear and Weezer all look like morons, but it pays off in this case...

...D.N.C.'s hard-money account. But in many cases there is a considerable gap between the dates on the call sheets and the eventual donations. For example, call sheets obtained by TIME show that on Feb. 6, 1996, Clinton was urged to contact Gail Zappa, widow of the musician Frank Zappa. Whether or not the President made the call, five months later she contributed $30,000 to the D.N.C., of which $20,000 was shifted into the hard account...
