...strange, half-submerged wilderness of southern Louisiana, people who live along the bayous came into the little towns: French-speaking Cajuns with their families, alligator hunters, Chinese shrimp fishermen, muskrat trappers, oil drillers, smugglers. Almost every community bore the scars of some earlier storm. Children around Port Lavaca, Tex. had played in the ruins of Indianola (once considered a rival of New Orleans), which was blown off the map in 1886. In 1893, while dwellers on the shore of Barataria Bay south of New Orleans were dancing to celebrate the end of a storm, mountainous waves suddenly swept over, wiped...
Most of the musicians are veterans of the old Chicago days. Consequently, their music can't be anything but authentic. Better still, the tames they play (Panama, Muskrat Ramble, Sugar, That's A'Plenty), are all products of the twenties, and therefore the correct vehicle for the unique Chicago style. Sure, if you want, they'll play Frenesi for you (with a few dirty looks thrown in), but why bother with that? It's not their kind of music. Finally, it's pleasant to learn that the Versailles will have its first Sunday evening jam session tomorrow. Bobby will M.C., and Pee Wee Russell...
...convict, woman and baby are rescued, get mixed up with Chinese muskrat hunters from the Louisiana swamps, are turned loose, drift to the house of a kind-hearted French-speaking Cajun alligator hunter, somewhere near the Gulf. When the convict sees his first alligator, and understands that it is to be killed, he thinks, "Well, maybe a mule standing in a lot looks big to a man that never walked up to one with a halter before." With that he jumps overboard, catches the alligator around the neck, stabs it. The convict becomes a local hero...
...reach town one day ahead of Albania's Princesses Myzeyen, Ruhijé and Maxhide, resumed his royal status in Washington's Union Station where he emerged from his train dressed in native costume of brown robe, white undershirt, jeweled turban and dagger. Promptly and rudely nicknamed "Sultan Muskrat" by Washington reporters, Oman's monarch naturally received the same amount of official attention that would have gone to England's George VI. After a 21-gun salute and exhibition drill from the Third Cavalry and 16th Field Artillery, he was guest of honor at a 35-place...
