...feeding center; a desperately weak man stares at a bowl of water; another is huddled by the remains of a fire with a packet of rehydration salts. As earlier in Ethiopia and Somalia, this famine is in part the result of civil war. Initially the fighting pitted the Muslim government in Khartoum against Christian rebels in the south; now the rebels are also killing one another. No one knows how many are starving, but in a cycle of hatred and revenge, peace is not in sight, nor is an end to hunger...

Hizballah, the Shi'ite Muslim Party of God, arrived publicly on the Middle East scene a decade ago in a hail of gunfire: young fighters, armed with grenades and shouting "Allahu Akbar!" captured an invading Israeli armored personnel carrier near Beirut in June 1982 and paraded it through the city. They took their name from a verse in the Koran, "Lo, the Party of God, they are victorious," and their money, weapons and inspiration from fundamentalist sponsors in Tehran...

Rebel Serbs and Croats, with overwhelming support from their kinsmen in the former republics of Yugoslavia, have together swallowed 90% of Bosnia's territory. The Serb militia is pounding on the gates of Sarajevo, and they are about to fly open. ...maps, even though Bosnia's Muslim, Croat and Serb leaders are set to talk once again this week of drawing up separate zones. The main question, and one that will torment the West for years to come, is the question of people, perhaps even the question of genocide. Milosevic's "final solution" is a wrenching dismemberment of Bosnia conceded to him by inept Western policy that will involve the largest dislocation of Europeans since World War II. Two million Serbs, Croats and Muslims are to be shoved around as the multiethnic country is rearranged along ethnic lines. More than...

Washington and Cairo cooperated last week to keep Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman out of circulation. The U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals rejected an asylum bid by the radical Muslim cleric, now being held in a federal prison, and upheld a deportation order issued in March. Egyptian authorities also began seeking his extradition to face charges of inciting antigovernment riots in Egypt in 1989 -- though the 1874 treaty governing extradition between the U.S. and Egypt does not appear to cover that offense. Egypt hanged seven of the sheik's followers last week for attacks against foreign tourists and conspiring to overthrow...
