...Tunisian government, like many of its neighbors, recognizes the potential in such trade. Already the exporter of 30% of the world's dates, many destined for markets in Europe's Muslim neighborhoods, Tunisia wants to make a name for its country's nectarines, oranges, wines and even olive oil - which is currently shipped out in bulk, mixed and then bottled under Italian and Spanish labels. Mohamed Ali Jendoubi, a top agriculture ministry official, says that, with the right kind of marketing, people will seek out Tunisian products. "With our climate, our fruit has the taste of the sun," he says...
...issue for him? His series of speeches this week focusing on his love of America confronted a trifecta of challenges for his campaign. First, he tackled criticism that he lacks the gravitas to be Commander in Chief. Second, he confronted head-on the false rumors that he is a Muslim or refuses to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. And third, his choice of venues was telling: semirural, mostly white areas where many voters have been skeptical of his candidacy. "Obama will never win rural America in the fall, but this is about margins," says Larry Sabato, director of the University...
...Turkish embassy. Hollywood, even in its most fanciful moments, couldn't have done it better. On June 28, a police report was filed against Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim by a 23-year-old male political volunteer, who accused the opposition leader of sodomizing him. Sodomy is a crime in Muslim-majority Malaysia punishable by up to 20 years in jail. He released a statement calling the legal action political retribution for the opposition's breakthrough victories in March elections...
...jail time didn't diminish Anwar's political fervor. In March, he helped orchestrate an electoral embarrassment of the ruling National Front coalition by an unwieldy, multiracial opposition consisting of, among others, Muslim Malays who believe Shari'a law could wipe out social ills and Chinese who advocate a secular Malaysia. In typically bold fashion, Anwar has vowed that the opposition will topple the National Front government by mid-September. If he succeeds, the 60-year-old former Muslim youth leader could become the first opposition Prime Minister in Malaysia's history...
...Predictably, McEwan himself has come now under fire, with the Muslim Council of Britain scolding him for defending Amis. Amis himself has remained silent, having already weighed in last autumn with a less-than-collegial missive to Eagleton: "He has submitted to an unworthy combination of venom and sloth," Amis wrote. "Can I ask him, in a collegial spirit, to shut up about it?" Maybe he'll end up wishing he'd made the same request, perhaps more politely, to his friend McEwan...
