Ford Motor Co. is throwing a party in Los Angeles this week, on the eve of the Los Angeles Auto Show, to celebrate the re-birth of its classic Mustang. Though the car will likely reach showrooms in March, 2009, it is already stirring interest among what Ford's representatives excitedly call 'Mustang Nation,' the legion of owners and other devoted fans. "Some of the Mustang web sites are already talking about the [car's] new rear end," says Robert Gelardi, the senior Ford Designer responsible for the car's new look...
Ford is hoping for the kind of new-car buzz that's rarely heard these days, as recession-smitten consumers shun showrooms. "We put in dramatic shape and sculpture," Gelardi boasts, but quickly adds that Ford is "not re-inventing what Mustang is." Each driver is given a navigator, a babe on loan from a nearby women's prison, and Ames's is Case (Natalie Martinez), who has pneumatic skills of her own. Sitting next to him in their two-seater Ford Mustang GT with the mini-gun .308 and MG-42 8mm. weapons attached to the front, she may be Ames's doom or his salvation. Or she may be there just for her looks: an eye-catching hood ornament, moved inside for safety...
...Best Vehicle: Attack-mode KITT. Competition was stiff in this category, what with Nite Owl's ship, Bond's Aston Martin and some sort of GI Joe digging device on the floor. But this Mustang on steroids designed for NBC's new Knight Rider boasts Lamborghini doors, a top speed of 377 m.p.h. and, most importantly, turbo-boost. All that vehicular decadence helps us forget about $4/gal...
