...same with Bontecou, who produced some of the gravest, most tough-minded and even belligerent art of the 1960s. Three-dimensional wall pieces, they were constructed by attaching strips of rough canvas to welded metal frameworks, using bristling threads of thin wire. Always featuring one or more mute, sinister holes, the wall pieces conflated all kinds of mysteries and anxieties--about the human body, the primal instincts, the state of the world, the universe itself--into enigmas that shoot forward like field cannons. You don't just stand in front of something like Untitled from 1966. You bob and weave...

"I think we're seeing the idea percolating here of a Clinton-Clark ticket." Clark sighed and hit the mute button. "Oh, brother," he said. "Politics...

In Returner, he played an orphaned assassin-for-hire, and he was a bowling-addicted stockbroker in another Japanese...

Last Wednesday officials launched homicide inquiries after Marie Humbert injected barbiturates into the IV drip of her severely handicapped son, Vincent; he died Friday. Left blind, paralyzed and mute after a 2000 auto accident, the mentally sound Vincent used movement in his thumb to communicate his physical and emotional agony over his "locked-in" condition. In a November letter to President Jacques Chirac, he asked that his mother be allowed to help him end his torment without risking prosecution...

...newspaper of the University of Texas at Austin, and later in a Chicago's alternative paper. Read episodically, these strips must have seemed little more than a mysterious downer. Presented collectively, the themes become much clearer, with narrative threads that tenuously link one strip to the next. Most are mute pantomimes featuring the Quimby character, who, not coincidentally, looks a lot like George Herriman's Ignatz Mouse. (Ignatz and Krazy Kat appear within the first ten pages of the sketchbooks, along with Superman, Batman, some live model drawings and an empty laundry room.) Quimby's nature changes from strip...
