Hu said both sides of the Taiwan Strait believe in the one China principle, but both sides have different definitions. This is what we call one China, different interpretations. This is the first time a leader in mainland China recognized that. That paved the way for mutual trust. I think the Chinese leaders are interested in having this kind of interaction with Taiwan. After all, they don't want war. They...

...many mainland students will come to Taiwan to study. And that is also my policy. I want to make young people of the two sides have an opportunity to get to know each other at a relatively early stage of their lives. This is the best way for mutual understanding. If we continue to do that, in the next ten years, you will have mainlanders in Taiwan, and Taiwanese on the mainland, a very close interrelationship. I don't see you could start a war like that. (India is booming, after all.) This proposed regional support, which could not as easily be stigmatized as "neocolonial" and therefore would have greater long-term legitimacy, could alleviate the burden on the U.S. and NATO and end up helping heal an otherwise failed and moribund state in a very critical part of our troubled world. ...officials suspect that Wilkis passed along information regarding that and other takeover attempts to Levine. Meanwhile, Drexel, Lazard and Shearson Lehman Bros. were all conducting internal investigations. Virtually every major securities firm in Manhattan circulated memos to employees reminding them of their ethical and legal responsibilities. One Wall Street mutual-fund manager confided that he is afraid even to telephone heads of companies whose stock his fund owns to discuss their firms' performance. As the press continued to dig for revelations, Director Sorkin said sourly, ''This has become a circus.'' True enough, but the show appeared to be far from...
