Blaming Wal-Mart is a common industry response, but it's also misguided. The grocers have contributed enormously to their own problems. Their inefficient supply chain, for instance, provided Wal-Mart with a golden opportunity. And their initial response to the new threat was fairly myopic. Like too many of his fellow grocers, Davis thought getting bigger himself would make things better. Before Wal-Mart, he says, "we tried to limit our distance from our warehouses to 300 miles. Now we're going 500 miles" to reach stores as far as the Gulf Coast. Kroger, Albertson's and Safeway each...
...being able to join this group. The community journal is cluttered with immaculately formulated lists of post-punk, avant-classical, metal, indie and electronica acts, most of which are so thoughtfully “insider” they’re insipid. These lists are invariably attacked for being myopic, scene-dependent and safe. My issue isn’t so much that the Fuck You Crew have the nerve to condemn the lists themselves. Palmer’s myopic focus on satiating his own greed is shocking, especially while tens of students—or at least five of us, counting Dartboard—were deprived of pizza. ...they seem to have done so as a matter of convenience--to get the issue "off the table" so they could concentrate on populist economics. An Edwards adviser told me the Senator wasn't emphasizing foreign policy because "that's not what people are interested in." That seems myopic. The Edwards ascendancy has been stunted by the Senator's youthful appearance--he could use the opposite of Botox--and there is no more painless way to inject gravitox into a campaign than to speak with knowledge and controlled passion about foreign policy issues...
