...athletic trainer used to be sort of a mystic figure who learned training from someone," says B.J. Baker, trainer for the Harvard mens' soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams. Now the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) has established a curriculum for trainers, and most universities--including Harvard--require their trainers to complete the NATA program...

Historically, retreats into the occult and the mystic have often been correlated with times of social stress, such as during the height of the Dark Ages, and I fear this is one more sign of a "malaise" we have been trying to deny. The casual acceptance of ignorant superstition at the highest political level speaks of an intellectual retreat, for which the Reagan Administration has often been criticized. Dupont and others have hinted that it would be better if pros were brought in. Forget the upstart collegians. Bring in the guys who make a living playing hockey. Let them take on the Russians. Let them kick some...

...Third Law of Motion: for every U.S. action in Viet Nam, there came a (seemingly) equal and opposite reaction back home. America internalized the war, as if it had swallowed fire. In the fall of 1967, 35,000 demonstrators had marched on the Pentagon and in the hip-mystic style had attempted with chants to levitate the palace of the war machine. Draft resistance had become a conspicuous form of American political theater. Young men burned their draft cards in front of news cameras, the flames licking around the edges of the cardboard in a poetic echo of the televised...
