Jamal grew up in Nablus, the son of a shopkeeper, but left after the 1967 war to study medicine in England. Not yet 18, he changed his mind - to his parents' displeasure - and headed for Barcelona. Survival and paying for his medical studies meant all sorts of jobs: distributing leaflets, playing semi-pro soccer, being a mafioso extra in a film about boxing. "One Christmas I was employed as one of the Three Kings, the black one," laughs Jamal over a coffee in the Ateneo, Barcelona's leading cultural forum. Jamal is now 50 and married to a Catalan...
Jamal persevered because he loves cooking and saw an opportunity to provide food for thought, so to speak, about Arab culture. This he does with engaging humor and scant respect for many Arab governments. He intersperses juicy recipes and equally juicy stories about growing up in Nablus and attending conferences around the world as an adult. He explains how to make falafel, tabbouleh, baba ghanoush and lesser-known dishes. At the same time, the reader picks up knowledge that is not strictly culinary. ...MIDDLE EAST Deadly Impasse As Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met with President George W. Bush in Washington, fighting continued unabated back home. A day after a Palestinian killed three people in Hamra, a Jewish settlement on the West Bank, Israel retaliated with air strikes on Palestinian Authority headquarters in Nablus. The army also launched incursions into the West Bank to hunt down suspected militants...
...although their warheads exploded harmlessly in an open field, the political shock waves are still being felt throughout Israel. The Israeli Defense Force responded with three heavy air raids over 24 hours on Palestinian security targets in Gaza City, and sent its tanks back into the Palestinian city of Nablus in the West Bank. And that, in turn, prompted a crowd of 300 militant supporters to storm the Palestinian Authority prison in Hebron late Monday, freeing 10 Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders...
...Then came the Karine A weapons shipment, which Israel claims proved Arafat malafides as a peace partner. And then the Karni assassination, which prompted the grassroots structures of Arafat's own organization to void his cease-fire. Hamas on Tuesday promised an "all-out war" in retaliation for the Nablus killings, and Israel's military intelligence chief warned legislators to expect even harsher terror strikes in the coming weeks as vengeance now tops the priorities of the Islamist group...
