Fighting TB Your article about drug-resistant TB was excellent, and the photographs were exceptional [Oct. 13]. As James Nachtwey mentioned, this terrible disease is treatable. Yet, a caption states, "Pills are still difficult to swallow, have an unpleasant taste and must be taken daily for six months." As a nurse, I immediately see possible solutions. First, ask drug companies to change the shape of the pills or make them smaller, if they are difficult to swallow. Second, place pills that are bitter inside empty capsules - no unpleasant taste. Third, explain the critical nature of the disease in one power...
...document the ongoing TB epidemic, TIME's James Nachtwey traveled to seven countries over the last five months, photographing the diverse and changing face of the disease. As his images show, controlling the epidemic requires investing not just in new technologies but also in expanding existing programs to control and detect TB before it even becomes resistant. And dots (Directly Observed Treatment, Short Course) is a critical part of that strategy. Developed in the 1990s, the program requires health officials to be present to watch their patients take their complete course of medications, even if it means visiting them...
...that Jim Nachtwey is the world's most distinguished photojournalist doesn't convey the power of what Jim does or the intensity with which he does it. Since 1984, Jim has documented conflicts around the world for TIME and been our photographic witness to many of the planet's most tragic events in recent history, from the genocide in Rwanda to the famine in Somalia...
Over the past five months, TIME's James Nachtwey has documented the resurgence of TB in seven countries. Turning back the epidemic will require not just newer and more effective drugs but also better ways to detect the disease and a renewed commitment to expanding existing TB-treatment programs. In June the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended a new, rapid test for TB that can provide results in as little as two days. But for most TB-ravaged nations, adopting the technique will require upgrading lab facilities. That's not easy, but it's something WHO hopes will ultimately help...
...cover portrait of the Dalai Lama is courtesy of another name familiar to TIME readers: James Nachtwey. Pairing Pico with Nachtwey, the planet's pre-eminent news photographer, seemed like journalistic Nirvana. The two first worked together in South Korea, 20 years ago. Jim, who has devoted his life to documenting wars and tragedy and famine everywhere from El Salvador to the West Bank to the Sudan, had always told us that if he ever had the chance to photograph the Dalai Lama, he would drop everything and do it. He got the chance and spent five days in March...
