...conservative groups will have spent more than $20 million to promote their sharply different pictures of Bork. Since the President announced Bork's nomination six weeks ago, the pro- and anti-Bork juggernauts have accelerated. "It's like a toboggan going downhill," says Consumer Advocate and Bork Opponent Ralph Nader. "It's shaping up as the biggest battle in a long time." For liberals, the stakes were emphasized by the medical problems of three of the four Justices who usually support their views. Thurgood Marshall, 79, was hospitalized last week for a blood clot in his right foot, and William...
...Constitution's great merit lies in its timeliness, its depth and its durability. People like Ralph Nader, the consumer advocate, and Bernie Sanders, the socialist mayor of Burlington, Vt., would sacrifice the individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution for specific economic amendments. There is great danger in adopting ideas that may be fleeting in nature. Legislative avenues are available for the introduction of new notions...
...fairness doctrine, critics add, may actually inhibit the free flow of ideas by inducing stations to avoid controversial topics that might stir complaints. Then they must allow broader access to the information essential to a wide public discussion of the important issues before the University...
Despite the changes taking place, antismoking lobbyists continue to press for stricter limitations on smoking in the workplace. Last week the American Public Health Association and Ralph Nader's Public Citizen Health Research Group petitioned the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to impose an emergency rule that would eliminate or restrict smoking in virtually all indoor work sites. While the Government is not expected to take any immediate action, the pressure is sure to grow. Smokers, after all, make up a shrinking minority. Nonsmokers, like any other large majority, know the numbers -- and the clout -- are increasingly on their side...
