...Goldmann Affair. Despite such protests, the bombing was clearly a propaganda setback for Israel. So was the fallout from an incident that occurred earlier in the week that the Israelis called "the Goldmann Affair." Dr. Nahum Goldmann, 74, is a Polish-born Zionist leader who maintains that for the sake of peace Israel ought to be a small neutralized protectorate "of the whole of mankind," including Arabs. Through political contacts outside Israel, Goldmann apparently managed to interest Nasser in a meeting to explore possible peace terms. Nasser insisted, however, that Goldmann notify the Israeli government of what he was doing...

Everyone knows Ben Jonson, Tennyson and Wordsworth, but who ever heard of Nahum Tate, Laurence Eusden, and William Whitehead? All six men share the dignity of having been poets laureate of England, a tradition that goes back 350 years. According to the 17th and most recent laureate, John Masefield, this high post "is responsible for some of the world's worst literature." Goldmann spoke for 25 minutes of Germany's crimes against Jewry. When he had finished, the usually unemotional Adenauer said: "While you spoke, I felt the wings of history in this room. What do you want concretely?" Goldmann asked for $1 billion in reparations for Israel; Adenauer agreed on the spot...

Lawyer Robert Kempner, who was a U.S. prosecutor at the Nürnberg trials points out that the Nazi killers of 4,000 Roman Catholic priests have not yet been brought to trial. The Communists may well be withholding evidence about Nazi criminals in order to embarrass West Germany, once the statute of limitations expires...

...opposed to the content of the declaration," he said-but he was clearly piqued because Ben-Gurion proclaimed it through the rival American Jewish Committee. Moreover, Goldmann knew that the statement did not represent Ben-Gurion's feelings as so often publicly expressed. Last fortnight, Polish-born Nahum Goldmann, a naturalized U.S. citizen since 1945, took up Ben-Gurion's longstanding personal challenge, said he would give up his U.S. citizenship and join Israel's new Liberal Party to fight Ben-Gurion. Israelis figured that he might run for public office in the future. Two Israeli Cabinet...
