This society was founded, as its name implies, in the year 1770. It was established by a few students who banded together for the purpose of improving themselves in elocution. For some thirty years after its foundation, it was called the Speaking Club of 1770. Unlike most societies which are established for this purpose, its existence was not imperilled by the large number of its rivals, but on the contrary it "swallowed up" numerous societies of smaller growth. ...crowded chapel awaited the service in Appleton Chapel last evening, at which Prof. Harris, - whose name has been brought prominently forward in the recent Andover trial, - was to preach. The service opened with a short prayer, which was followed by the reading of the Seventy-second Psalm. The long prayer was a petition for unity and peace among all people. After a hymn sung by the congregation, Prof. Harris gave out the text from St. Matthew, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." This was humanitarianism.
