...neocon ideologue like Wolfowitz and has cultivated warmer relations with Congress. In 2002 he helped save billions of dollars by combining the Navy and Marine Corps aviation programs, and he has been given politically sensitive duties, notably overseeing the Pentagon's review of detainee cases at Guantánamo Bay. Rumsfeld is counting on England's skills to help reform hiring and firing rules for the Pentagon's 700,000-strong civilian work force; implement the closing or realigning of bases around the U.S.; and supervise the Quadrennial Defense Review, which will decide what weapons get funded or axed during...

...Show and Ask at Gitmo Your report confirms that the military used sexual tactics at the Guantánamo Bay prison [Feb. 21], where female interrogators touched handcuffed detainees in sexually suggestive ways in an attempt to extract information. Those practices, deliberately violating Muslim taboos, have less to do with sex than with religion. Religious humiliation and degradation are prohibited by international law and dishonor our country. ...prophet. I suspect that for him, sending troops into Iraq (and perhaps Iran in the future) was merely politically expedient. If the President's commitment to freedom is as idealistic as it sounds, why not invade North Korea? And one might also consider the detainees in Guantánamo Bay, who lost their basic right to a fair trial while they were imprisoned for years. Freedom is not a word you can bandy about as verbal punctuation. Let's hope Bush will learn what it actually means. That would bode well for the future. Iona Sharma Merseyside, England Bush...
