...Died. Naoya Shiga, 88, the grand old misanthropic master of Japanese letters, known to his countrymen as "the Divine Novelist" and "Emperor Shiga"; of pneumonia; in Tokyo. Shiga was a perfectionist who spent 16 years writing his only full-length novel, a semi-autobiographical work called Anya Koro (Journey Through the Darkness). But he was a prolific short-story writer and essayist. His delicate and unadorned prose made his works classics.
