MUSIC Death Cab for Cutie Narrow Stairs; out May 13 On their second major-label album, the kings of emotional nerdiness mine their broken hearts with just enough sonic abandon to keep things sharp. The single I Will Possess Your Heart builds over eight brooding, Wilco-ish minutes (take that, mainstream radio!), while there's actual guitar feedback on Talking Bird. A nice step in a darker direction...
...confined. Ravaged by an unidentified infection, she is currently in a medically induced coma. There have been reports that, despite her youth, many of her teeth are missing. Stefan has fared somewhat better, although his skin, like that of his siblings, is ghostly pale. Life in a warren of narrow corridors and low ceilings has damaged the spatial orientation of Stefan and Felix, and there may be more serious consequences for all three: health experts say a chronic lack of sunlight and exercise can leave children's bones pliable, their muscles weak and their eyes overly sensitive to strong light...
Karen Tumulty's caricature of Obama's bitter-voters observation as a "dismissal of small-town voters as narrow-minded, churchgoing gun nuts" who are "irrational and bigoted" represents political spin rather than a fair reading of his words. Meanwhile, almost every scenario has Obama maintaining his slim but stable lead among pledged delegates through the May 6 contests in Indiana and North Carolina--and the final primaries on June 3. The idea that Clinton can narrow her deficit among all delegates and then vault over Obama with a rush of support from uncommitted superdelegates is still remote. But it no longer seems impossible. There are fresh signs that the dispute over the rogue primaries held by Florida and Michigan may be resolved in a way that delivers more...
...elimination of Ayro is an unqualified success, but it is also a narrow one. Before Ethiopian and U.S. operations began in 2006, Somalia was already one of the most unfortunate countries in the world, with no government, little infrastructure, and a propensity for periodic famine and floods. The humanitarian situation has since worsened to the point where the U.N. describes it as the worst on the struggling continent. And there is little dispute that the cause of the dramatic humanitarian decline has been the upsurge in violence in the wake of the U.S.-backed Ethiopian invasion. There is also little...
