...months ago when I walked down the narrow alleyways of Mombasa, I never would have imagined that this sleepy city could turn into the war-zone that it is today. But, since the rigged December 27th presidential elections, violence has swept over Kenya from the port city of Mombasa to the slums of Nairobi. By comparison to some of its East African neighbors, Kenya has been an example of peaceful democracy. Nevertheless, Kenya’s current unrest is the legacy of its failure to address historical injustices and is a sad reminder of the virulent resentments that longstanding inequalities...
...happy to see that Chinese President Hu Jintao was a runner-up. China has been transformed by Deng Xiaoping's exhortation that "to get rich is glorious," but Hu wants to narrow the gap between rich and poor so every Chinese can share in the wealth of economic growth. Hu has built a good image for China and expanded the nation's global influence. He will eventually encourage the Chinese people to accelerate political reform. Song Xiaowen, Zhongli City, Taiwan...

There was nothing on the body to identify him, no one in the area knew him, and within hours he joined hundreds of corpses at mortuaries across Kenya, awaiting claim. Unknown...

A foreign voice called over the radio, "You will explode in a few minutes"--chilling words for those who remembered the small-boat attack on the U.S.S. Cole that killed 17 in 2000. Then, before the warships could fire, the boats turned away...
...Obama's narrow defeat at the hands of the Senator he just a few days earlier had clobbered in Iowa deprived the challenger of the clear and undisputed momentum he had enjoyed after Iowa. The outcome instead sends the Democratic race into several weeks of tough and expensive, hedgerow-to-hedgerow combat. About the only thing that is certain now is that the race will remain unclear for some time to come...
