...Treasury, will only have a limited effect. The government’s restrictions on executive compensation are firm, with opportunities for additional compensation only through the unpalatable option of restricted stock. The total savings to taxpayers, however, cannot be immense, mostly because the Treasury provisions have a narrow application. First, the provisions will not apply to the $350 billion of bailout funds already spent or allocated. Second, the provisions bypass large-time traders, brokers, and consultants, whose salary and bonuses often surpass the half-million-dollar limit. Third, healthier banks receiving funds through the Troubled Asset Relief Program will...
...lesser talent. Coming from as accomplished an artist as Newman, however, it can only be seen as a disappointment. “The Slow Wonder” suggested that Newman recognized no boundaries to his songwriting, but five years later he seems happy to constrain himself to the narrow territory he has already laid out. Hopefully when The New Pornographers reconvene to record their fifth album Newman will decide to once again take a few risks. ...watching the "narrow interests" stomp around the emergency room and the unpleasant decisions are watching from the sidelines, waiting for their cue. It is easy to dismiss the unanimous Republican opposition to the House version of the stimulus bill as bitter, clueless obstructionism. But I can't help but wonder at the gap between the aggressively sensible things Obama is saying and the passive way that he is acting. And you get a sense that a lot of people in the audience, the experts and economists as well as the worried working classes, are starting to wonder as well...
