...DREAM LIFE OF ANGELS If poor Rosetta had found a pal at one of her crummy jobs, the resulting film might have been this spare, coiled first feature from France's Erick Zonca. Marie (Natacha Regnier) is broody, draped in doom; Isa (Elodie Bouchez) is a sunny vagabond. Their friendship and rivalry are beautifully observed, magnificently portrayed...
...DREAM LIFE OF ANGELS Directed by Erick Zonca Starring Eloise Bouchez, Natacha Regnier...
...barring a debatable ending, Dream of Life actually does stick. Perhaps it's because the characters, Isa (Eloise Bouchez) and Marie (Natacha Regnier), don't ask anything of us, aren't playing to us. They're not even always likable: Isa's rough-and-readiness can quickly acquire a shrill, desperate edge, and Marie is generally painful to watch. The two live in an apartment Marie (somewhat unofficially) looks after; the owners all perished except for a comatose girl, whose diary captivates Isa. ...vagabonding Isa (Elodie Bouchez) meets Marie (Natacha Regnier) on an assembly line in Lille. It's hard work. But friendship is a tougher job, as this haunting first feature proves. Isa is defiantly sunny, her pal severe, volcanic. The stars shared the Best Actress prize at Cannes last year, and both are brilliant. But Bouchez's expressive face lets you speed-read...
...Hamlet is a microcosm of the production itself, as his desire to avenge his father's death is tamed by the play's genteel environment. Delivering lines with playful refinement, Scott's performance works best when he banters with Polonius (David Cromwell) or soundly rejects the love of Ophelia (Natacha Roi). But his passionate soliloquies fall flat, failing to tear the polite veneer from his countenance. His only way of communicating unbridled passion is with a hollow scream, which sounds insincere and empty...
