...Perhaps Natasha Richardson, the gifted British actress who stars in David Leveaux's sturdy Broadway revival, figured that the play might not be terrible if Anna weren't quite so Swedish. She jettisons the immigrant inflections for a flat Minnesota accent. More helpfully, she makes Anna a fighter, battered on the wheel of men's lust but still defiantly erect. The actors' posture is important here. As Anna's negligent father, Rip Torn walks with the cramped stride of a man who stays upright by lying to himself -- even as Torn remains true to the text by speaking...

...especially talented cast is the main attraction of this production. As the hilariously affected Natasha Navratilova, Janine Poreba is a marvelous Russian femme fatale. Her performance is just overdone enough to maintain the farcical edge, never lapsing into cliched corn. Chip Rossetti gives a pat, almost smug performance as playwright Sandor Turai. Turai is almost a straight parody of the Author in Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of the Character and while studied, Rossetti is more than amusing enough to keep us engaged...

...Tennessee Williams' 1958 hothouse melodrama about prefrontal lobotomy, closet homosexuality and cannibalism. If the subject matter no longer shocks, the play itself can still thrill, given the right actors. In PBS's Great Performances presentation, it has them, mostly. Maggie Smith, as Sebastian's aloof, vindictive mother, and especially Natasha Richardson, as his possibly insane cousin, who was with him when he died, are superb adversaries, both of them informing Williams' lyrical dialogue with the rich emotional life it must have. Only Rob Lowe fails, more callow med student than the requisite mediating psychiatrist...
