...production opens by introducing the smiling Mother (Raebecca Eichenberger) and Father (Cris Groenendaal) who, along with Little Boy (Nathan Keen), Mother's Younger Brother (Aloysius Gigl) and Grandfather (Austin Colyer) round out the white upper-class upstate New Yorkers. The audience is also introduced to Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Lawrence Hamilton), a talented Harlem pianist, and his captivating lover Sarah (Darlesia Cearcy); as well as to the fanatically patriotic immigrant Tateh (Michael Rupert) and his Little Girl (Jenell Slack). The three groups of people--the WASPs in frilly white, of course; the Harlem natives in deep burgundies and blues...
...money. In fact, the two richest men in America have appeared in ads recently. Bill Gates has endorsed a brand of golf clubs, and Warren Buffett is pushing private jets. Peter Lynch, the investment guru, retired from Fidelity years ago but is back starring in commercials for the firm. Nathan Myhrvold, a Microsoft executive, also has endorsed a jet. The ads say he owns one, which is another way of saying he doesn't need...
...leading men, Nathan Detroit (Geoff Oxnard) and Sky Masterson (Jason Mills), cannot be praised enough. The bumbling Nathan, trying to balance his beloved crap game and his doll Adelaide, goofs things up to near disaster but remains one of the most hysterically funny--and sweetly romantic--'guys' in the entire production. Mills, no stranger to the Hasty Pudding stage, lets the less farcical side of his acting abilities shine through while still making the audience howl with laugher and exuding a voice to swoon over...
...star of the show, unquestionably, has to be Miss Adelaide, played by Vered Metson with squawky gusto and a show-stopping voice. She fawns over her fiance (of 14 years!) Nathan, and the audience giggles; she prances around stage as the lead "Hot Box" girl, and the audience roars; she impishly mourns the possibility that Nathan might never marry her, and the audience audibly sighs in sympathy. One twitch of her eyebrows sends everyone into laugher; her shoulder-shimmying, red-wearing, bad-accent-sporting, all-out Adelaide brings down the house...
...During World War II, Cargo Cults flourished on New Guinea and Melanesia: people who had never seen an airplane pondered incoming U.S. aircraft and assumed they must be divine. Technology is confusing, and these were reasonable guesses under the circumstances. In 1995 Gates published a book (co-authored with Nathan Myhrvold and Peter Rinearson) called The Road Ahead. Peering far into the future, he glimpsed a technology-rich dreamworld where you will be able to "watch Gone With the Wind," he wrote, "with your own face and voice replacing Vivien Leigh's or Clark Gable's." Apparently this is just...
