He was born in Boston, May 1, 1818, the second son of Ralph Haskins, a well-known Boston merchant, and his wife, Rebecca-daughter of David Greene. He was graduated at Harvard in 1837, in the same class with Charles Theodore Rusell, Judge Nathaniel Holmes, Rev. John Weiss, Dr. Henry J. Bigelow, Horatio Hale, Surgeon General William J.
