Trollope has always had a distinguished following. Nathaniel Hawthorne claimed that he would rather write like Trollope than like Hawthorne. Trollope's novels, he said, "precisely suit my taste, solid and substantial, written on the strength of beef and through the inspiration of ale." Tolstoy said that "Trollope kills me, kills me with his excellence." A newer fan was an American Senator by the name of John Kennedy, who was seen reading The American Senator after he won the Democratic nomination in 1960. Former British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan always kept a Trollope novel on his night table...
BEING A LIFE-LONG Angeleno, I approached my first screening of Welcome with a pronounced ambivalence, half-expecting a compendium of cheap shots at the city to be woven into the plot. Films set in Los Angeles often spew out the same old Nathaniel West themes, only in a vulgarized way: the plasticity of Southern California, the impermanence of everything from buildings to relationships, etc. But the PR hype about Welcome to L.A. proved true in at least this one sense: Rudolph has carefully omitted all the stale cliches about the place and coined a couple of possible new ones...
Cuba's wandering minstrel of anti-imperialism, Fidel Castro, last week flatly denied that any Cuban soldiers were involved in the fighting. Western diplomats agree that there is no firm evidence of Cuban involvement. But there is speculation that the Katangese-who are purportedly led by General Nathaniel Nbumba, the former Katangese police commissioner-may have been trained by Cubans in Angola. Almost certainly, the Angolans and their Cuban allies tolerated or approved the invasion plans. Mobutu, insisting that the rebels are "led by Cubans," appealed for an emergency airlift of arms and ammunition from the U.S. to stop...

Self-conscious but skeptical, both are trapped in a void. More than an adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's familiar tale, Rappaccini's Daughter, now at the Loeb Ex, is a new play by Octavio Paz who grows poetry around the seed of Hawthorne's prose. With Hawthorne compressed and Paz added, the play offers a bounty of interpretive possibilities, some of which this production is able to luxuriate...
