Governor A. B. Chandler said yesterday National Guardsmen will move into eastern Kentucky's struck coal fields unless both sides assure him there will be no more violence.
Speaking on "Policies of the Democratic Party," the New York City politician said the party's strength rests on rank-and-file members in the nation's 125,000 election districts. Their views, he continued, "ultimately determine policy at the county, state, and national level."
The Democratic Party, Schlesinger continued, is "concerned with forward motion in our national life." Democrats, however, must be aware of "bad bosses" and "party hacks" who alienate a party's intelligent members by "causing its intellectual death."
Only a short time before, Eisenhower had given his blessing to the selection of Sen. Thruston B. Morton of Kentucky to succeed Meade Alcorn as Republican National Committee Chairman. Tradition assures Morton of the job. He is regarded as a supporter of vice-President Nixon.
Morton's election is scheduled formally for Saturday, with indications he will have no opponent. The national committee also will decide then on a city and date for the 1960 nominating convention. Chicago and a July 25 opening date still appear to be favored.
