...Zyuganov's collection of Russian communists, the emphasis on the word Russian is perhaps heavier than on the word communist. In building a new statist movement, Zyuganov seems to be readying another version of the red-brown--that is, communist-nationalist--alliance that shook the democrats in parliament a few years ago. Zyuganov is calling on all "patriots" to rally around his banner in the cause of a powerful Russian state, an alternative to the West. His basic appeal is to all who feel anger, pain and shame at the demise of the great Soviet Union and the decline...

...country's openness toward other religions and cultures remains its most remarkable feature. Despite its extreme wing, the SDA is the only nationalist party in Bosnia that gives some support to the idea of a multiethnic state. It has refrained from openly suppressing opposition parties, and it tolerates independent newspapers and radio that engage in lively and often critical public debate. "I spend sleepless nights analyzing what we have done and thinking about the future," Yeltsin said. "Every time, I feel convinced we have chosen the correct path and we must not steer away from that under any circumstances." Even as Yeltsin spoke...

...Zedong, the leader of the communist revolution that forced Chiang Kai-shek and his Nationalist government to flee to the island of Taiwan in 1949, used to say he could wait 100 years to bring the province back into the fold. Today's men in Beijing are less patient, perhaps sensing that Taiwan is growing stronger and more distant all the time. Last week, in a formal speech at the Great Hall of the People, Premier Li Peng lectured the citizens of the island: No matter how they might choose their President, "they cannot change the fact that Taiwan...
