...Star Called Henry (Viking; 343 pages; $24.95), Roddy Doyle's new novel about the birth of the modern Irish nation, begins with the vivid miseries of its hero, young Henry Smart, who is named for a dead brother whom his grieving mother can't forget. The time is the turn of the century, a dreary hiatus between a past of colonial starvation and a future of war and revolution. Henry's father, a one-legged Dublin bully-boy who free-lances as the doorman at a brothel, can't support the family, so Henry runs wild, stealing from shopkeepers, sleeping...
Those Clintons are a team! First Bill grants clemency to violent criminals on the condition they won't be violent anymore, thereby guaranteeing Hillary New York's Hispanic vote [NATION, Sept. 13]. Then Hillary denounces hubby's move, posturing as a patriot with feet planted firmly on high moral ground, thus getting the rest of the votes. The wimp Republicans don't stand a chance against these professional con people. JIMMY REED Oxford, Miss...
What you failed to mention about Barry Scheck [NATION, Sept. 13] is that this is the same Barry Scheck who convincingly argued in the O.J. Simpson trial that DNA samples can be contaminated and made useless (or at least open to "reasonable doubt") as scientific evidence in a criminal trial. Through his own arguments, we are left with two possible conclusions: either Scheck is freeing potentially guilty people through the Innocence Project, or he successfully defended a double murderer he knew to be guilty. I don't know whether to laud this man or deplore him. JEFFREY M. LLEWELLYN Denver...

Beijing already had one "gotcha" last spring when PRESIDENT CLINTON balked at admitting the nation to the World Trade Organization. Entry to the organization is a huge issue for the Chinese, who hope it would boost their economy and end the fiery annual fight over most-favored-nation status. China's leaders may be in for another surprise. This week Chinese negotiators are due in Washington to reopen WTO talks. A top Chinese diplomat told TIME that Beijing believes accession has been pretty...
Watching Ethan Allen closely will be Heilig-Meyers, the nation's biggest furniture retailer, with more than 800 stores. The traditional Heilig customer is lower-middle income and lives in a small town--not a big online demographic. Today Heilig has a modest informational website, where customers can print coupons and find stores but not shop. "We're not certain that anyone has got a profitable business model yet in this industry, and so we're taking a wait-and-see attitude," explains Brian Hopping, a Heilig spokesman...
