...Resistance on the Hill has jeopardized the proposed $20 billion U.S. contribution to the IMF Asian bailout. Big Labor Democrats and traditional Republicans such as Newt Gingrich are on board, says Carney. "But there's a deepening nativist strain in the GOP, best characterized by someone like Pat Buchanan. They don't like explaining at home why the U.S. is spending billions to bail out some South Korean bank halfway around the world...
...Arshile Gorky; sometimes its sources lay hidden in the unconscious, as with Pollock. Except for de Kooning and Franz Kline, most of the Abexers--Gorky, Pollock, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, William Baziotes, Barnett Newman, Adolph Gottlieb, Clyfford Still--saw the socially grounded activist art of the 1930s, whether Nativist like the Regionalism of Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton or left-wing Social Realist, as provincial, shallow and irrelevant. "Poor art for poor people," sniffed Gorky. They wanted to dive deeper. They valued the primordial, the spiritual, the primitive and the archetypal as sources of inspiration...
...anti-immigrant nativist sentiment that pervaded the United States in that era-some of which bears an uncomfortable resemblance to the rhetoric of Pat Buchanan and his herd of sheep-was one reason for the reluctance to absorb the homeless refugees. Hitler's righthand propaganda czar went as far as to say "At bottom... I believe both the English and the Americans are happy that we are exterminating the Jewish riff-raff." Affirmative action is under attack, and racism in the criminal justice system is still rampant. In a society that values equality, or virtue, people shouldn't have a right to act on their biases; that is the basic premise of all anti-discrimination law. They do, however, have a right to believe in them. Civil rights laws reach actions, not speeches or ideas, and they don't even reach all actions. David Duke and Louis Farrakhan...
...fell to the Great Polarizer to describe all this accurately. Dole's campaign, said Pat Buchanan in the South Carolina debate, is "vapid" and "hollow"--as the candidate demonstrated when he blew a particularly ripe opportunity last week. With Buchanan pushing his nativist protectionism elsewhere in the state, Dole toured the bustling BMW plant near Spartanburg, a symbol of South Carolina's embrace of the global economy. "It was a perfect chance to hit a home run for free trade and the interconnected world economy," says Governor David Beasley, an energetic Dole supporter. So what did Dole do? Nothing...
