Tales of treachery at the heart of NATO could help restore a downed stealth fighter?s bruised reputation, but the story may be less than the sum of its parts. NATO has reportedly arrested a spy within its command structure who allegedly passed on sensitive information that allowed Yugoslavia to down an F-117 stealth fighter in March, according to a report in the Scotsman newspaper. Unnamed NATO sources told the paper that a financially motivated turncoat had sold Russian intelligence agents some of the alliance?s Kosovo battle plans, including "detailed flight plans...

...NATO may yet pay a heavy price for its failure to rein in militant ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. Albanian demonstrators Tuesday continued their human blockade to stop Russian troops, authorized by the NATO-led peacekeeping mission, from taking control of the town of Orahovac. Tensions in the province reached boiling point Monday as local Kosovar Albanians charged that Russian mercenaries had participated in Serb atrocities during the war, and barred their entry to the town. "For weeks now Russian forces have been taking hits from Albanian snipers, while the Russians believe NATO is doing very little to stop the perpetrators...

Militant members of the Kosovo Liberation Army, whose campaign for independence was left in limbo after NATO took control of the province, have made the traditionally pro-Serb Russian forces the target of their anger over the past two months. The Russians have been furious both about attacks on their own personnel and over the continuing ethnic cleansing targeted against the province?s dwindling Serb population. "If there?s a concerted attack on the Russian forces in Kosovo now, they?ll likely return fire with interest," says Meier. And while that might be exactly what KLA hard-liners want...

Kosovo?s armed peace may be turning into a bigger headache for NATO than the war was ?- because this time, the alliance doesn?t know who to support. U.S. troops overnight Wednesday rushed to the rescue of their Russian comrades in the village of Dobrcane, firing over the heads of a crowd of ethnic-Albanians pelting the Russians with rocks. It was one of three clashes overnight between peacekeepers and supporters of the Kosovo Liberation Army, incidents which have become an almost daily occurrence as returning refugees seek vengeance on the province?s remaining Serbs and Russian peacekeepers...

...Hashem Thaci, despite political support from Washington, is himself one of the movement?s leading hard-liners. The ethnic cleansing of the province?s remaining Serbs and the violence against peacekeepers would be unlikely without at least the tacit support of the KLA. And that?s a problem for NATO, which insists on a multiethnic Kosovo, and opposes independence. But it?s not only a problem of principle: Both Belgrade and Moscow have warned that they won?t tolerate the KLA running riot in the province, and if NATO won?t stop it, they?ll do it themselves...
