...rapidly accelerating movement which aims to breathe the spark of living production into the library-bound theatre of Henrik Ibsen made its first local manifestation last week when Eva Le Gallienne presented "Rosmersholm." Now the eminent Alla Nazimova has added the bright flame of her talent to this Ibsen revivification by offering "Ghosts" for a two weeks run at the Colonial Theatre. The fame of the work renders superfluous any detailed analysis of its individual characteristics. A more interesting question is that of Ibsen's place in the modern theatre as revealed in this excellent production...
Getting back to the immediate issue it must be noted that Madame Nazimova plays with an intensity and gravity which compel sympathy and which make the drama as vivid to us as could possibly be expected. In the difficult role of young Alving, her son, Harry Ellerbe, performs with deep sincerity and skill. One Munson is properly earthy and youthful in the part of Regina, the servant girl and McKay Morris as Pastor Manders and Raymond O'Brien as Jacob Engstrand both create vivid personalities...
Doctor Monica (adapted by Laura Walker from the Polish of Marja M. Szczepkowska; Robert Martin, producer). The oval, heavy-eyed face of Alia Nazimova is now lined and pouched with old hysterias. Her mouth pulls naturally down at the corners. Her pictures make her look either like the bedraggled murderess at the scene of the crime or like Mary, Queen of Scots. Yet the baroque stumblings, wrist-wavings, jaw-droppings, head-wagglings with which Miss Nazimova documents Doctor Monica seriously involved Manhattan audiences in a play that should have been a dull and outdated feminist tract...

Besides Miss Nazimova, they include Dr. Monica's lady architect roommate (Gale Sondergaard) and a pregnant servant girl (Beatrice de Neergaard) whom Miss Nazimova takes in. Nazimova has been giving her husband a dose of solitude to "strengthen" him, meanwhile undergoing an operation to enable her to have a child by him. Demoralized by the operation, she is further demoralized to learn that the father of the servant girl's unborn child is her philandering husband. ...Cherry Orchard"--New Amsterdam Theatre, 42nd Street, W.--Alla Nazimova in Tchekov's most popular play. Like all of Miss Gallionne's repertory, "Cherry Orchard" is excellent and well-acted. Alternates with "Alice in Wonderland" done in the best Tenniel fashion with elaborate hares, hatters, and cats. "Cherry Orchard" plays Monday through Wednesday, and "Alice," that is the last word, the remainder of the week...
