...foreigners saw the Heidelberg Festival. But the courtyard was packed with German tourists, mostly guests of the Nazi Kraft durch Freude (Strength Through Joy) organization, and Reich Minister of Propaganda Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels was conspicuously present in the front row. Before the festival ends next week they will see three native German dramas: Josef von Eichendorff's Die Freier, Friedrich von Schiller's Die Räuber, Gerhart Hauptmann's Florian Geyer. But Shakespeare is the main dish. A Midsummer Night's Dream opened the festival, was scheduled for 21 performances...
...into ideological hemispheres last month when Great Britain, France and the U. S. withdrew from the Venice International Film Festival (TIME, July 3). Last week the musical world showed signs of a similar division. The Rome-Berlin Axis was much in evidence at Bayreuth, Wagnerian shrine, where the stodgy, Nazi-favored conductors of recent years were joined by an Italian, Victor de Sabata. The Vatican was to send to Lucerne its nonpolitical Sistine Chapel Choir...
Last month, the New York Times's scholarly Berlin correspondent, Otto D. Tolischus, cabled home a learned, heavily statisticized summary of an official survey of Nazi economics. Appended to his cable was a casual last paragraph which remarked that unofficial estimates placed Germany's secret debt at between 20-25,000,000,000 marks, and her total public debt at upward of 64,000,000,000 marks ($25,683,200,000). Last week SEC embarrassed the Nazi Government by asking it to tell all about its hush-hush bookkeeping...
...bonds. These were not to be sold in the U. S.-they could not be. They were to be offered in lieu of interest for the years 1937-40 to U. S. holders of $250,000,000 of German bonds. As if the Nazi Government were a deceptive promoter, SEC cracked down with the threat of a stop-order, set August 15 for public hearings...
