Another centennial find is the reconstructed Fort Union Trading Post, built in 1829, near the confluence of the strategic Missouri and Yellowstone rivers in the northwest corner of North Dakota. Fort Union served as a linchpin in John Jacob Astor's lucrative beaver-fur and buffalo trade with the Assiniboin, Crow and Blackfeet Indians. In its halcyon days, which lasted a quarter- century, the post dominated the upper Missouri from behind an elegant, whitewashed palisade. Annual steamboats brought artists and ethnologists. The bourgeois, or superintendent, maintained a splendid table, and French wine flowed in an imposing residence topped with...
...watching closely to see how well the new IRS commissioner, Fred Goldberg Jr., who stepped in after the abrupt resignation * of Lawrence Gibbs last March, will follow up on the allegations. "I think all of us understand that we have a big challenge ahead of us," testified Goldberg near the conclusion of the hearings. Last week's uncomfortable spotlight may have supplied the IRS with some much needed motivation. Said Edward Habecker, a former IRS official, in testimony at the hearings: "What is lacking today within the IRS is not the tools, but the desire to maintain high ethical standards...
...agenda for the coming months. She called on the L.D.P. to dissolve the lower house and hold new elections. She planned to act on demands by voters to strengthen the lax laws on political ethics and campaign contributions that allowed the Liberal Democrats to peddle influence with near impunity. Eight days after United Airlines Flight 232 crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa, killing 111 of its 286 passengers and crew, a Korean Air Lines DC- 10 carrying 199 people plowed into an olive grove near Tripoli, Libya. As was the case in Sioux City, a majority of those aboard the KAL flight survived, but as many as 80 were killed. The same day in Los Angeles a United DC-10 had another close call: though the pilot reported a hydraulic leak, he managed to bring in his plane...
Like Jupiter and Saturn, but unlike its near-twin next-door neighbor, Uranus, Neptune appears to have distinct weather patterns. The probe's cameras have glimpsed a streak of white that may be an atmospheric jet stream, longitudinal bands that could mark prevailing winds, and a dark blotch, perhaps similar to Jupiter's ancient high-pressure system known as the Great Red Spot. Neptune, Jupiter and Saturn all generate more heat than they receive from the sun, while Uranus does not; the excess heat may be the source of the turbulence...
