...Crete, where they were prevented from landing by Talos the bronze sentinel, a creation of Hephaestus, who pelted the Argo with rocks, as was his custom. Medea called sweetly to this monster . . . and, while he slept, she removed the bronze nail which stoppered the single vein running from his neck to his ankles. Out rushed the divine ichor, a colorless liquid serving him for blood, and he died...
Clue in the Neck. Dr. Szent-Gyorgyi (pronounced St. Georgie) entered the cancer field almost by chance. After he fled Hungary's Communist control in 1947, he was able to resume at Woods Hole his long work on muscle. Concentrating on one of the commonest of muscular diseases, myasthenia gravis, he had a clue. Sometimes a victim of "MG" does better after his thymus gland is removed. Searching for the explanation, Szent-Gyorgyi, who has a Cambridge Ph.D. in biochemistry besides his M.D., spent years doing delicate chemical dissections of the thymus glands of calves, supplied by Chicago...
Armour regularly shipped barrels of calf thymuses ("neck sweetbreads") to Szent-Gyorgyi in Woods Hole. His rooms atop the Marine Biological Laboratory building on Main Street began to overflow with centrifuges used to extract submicroscopic quantities of promine and retine. More recently, Dr. Szent-Gyorgyi and his colleagues, Dr. Andrew Hegyeli and Jane A. McLaughlin, have found a cheaper and more abundant source: human urine. So, at nearby Otis Air Force Base, six latrines have special urinals, which yield from 60 to 100 liters a day for Dr. Szent-Gyorgyi's research...
Rachman looked the part of an Ian Fleming villain. Short and fat, with grotesquely tiny hands and feet, he had no neck, a bald head shaped like a soccer ball, and sunken blue eyes always hidden behind dark glasses. He dressed flashily, wore elevator shoes of crocodile leather. It amused him to watch naked lady wrestlers, and he had a fetish about hygiene, insisting that all his silverware be sterilized and un touched by human hands. More than most men, Rachman loved money and women...
Gardner did not check his idea with the White House, and confidently expects no trouble. Indeed, his new character is drawn not to resemble any specific little girl by the same name, and whenever "Miss Caroline" is with her parents, they are pictured only from the neck or waist down. But when her creators have her plowing up her vegetable garden because Daddy tells her there is a surplus, or throwing down a newspaper because "Walter Lippmann doesn't understand me," there is no chance of mistaken identity...
