...casts a shrewd eye on her immediate world. As she ages, that world shrinks, so that Hoke looms ever larger within it. As a result, she is forced to think harder about the growing civil rights struggle than she might otherwise have. An encounter with menacing red-neck cops on a country road, the bombing of her synagogue, a distant but moving exposure to the force of Martin Luther King Jr.'s oratory all have their effect on her. But mostly it is the simple presence of a good man that grants her age's greatest benison, expanding rather than...

Wendehals literally means turn neck, the name of a rare bird that can twist its head 180 degrees; the word has been adopted by East Germans to refer to the thousands of Communist Party officials, from Egon Krenz, the current party leader, down to district secretaries, who overnight began to sound as if they had joined the pro-democracy movement. ...Scott Aviation, a defense contractor based in Lancaster, N.Y., sold the Navy smoke-protection gear that the company knew did not work as intended. Since 1981 the Navy has purchased more than 450,000 of Scott's Emergency Escape Breathing Devices, hoodlike units that fit over the head and neck to provide breathable air while blocking the entry of toxic fumes. They are now used on virtually all naval vessels except submarines...

Director- choreographer Tommy Tune provides a pretentious last-minutes ballet between characters introduced as love and death. Despite these shortcomings, Grand Hotel is the musical winner of the season, bringing to mind, if not quite matching, the kinetic narratives of Harold Prince, Bob Fosse and Michael Bennett in their heyday. Tune takes a set more cluttered than Threepenny's -- fluted columns...
