This collection of interviews with inhabitants of the sexual fringe reads like an odd combination of a reporter's raw files and an undergraduate's paper. The strength here is that the author does dig up unquestionably fascinating subjects: vampires who drink one another's blood, necrophiliac morticians, people who claim to have been abducted and sexually molested by aliens, a married surgeon who sleeps with 10 women a month. But her writing style can be monotonous and self-conscious, and her need to place these people in cultural context and blame society for their freakish proclivities is trite. Still...
...here we go! But where? What is the purpose of a vaguely necrophiliac fuss over someone so recently departed? Most revivals take a generation or more, but Bernstein Redux has happened in less than the minimum time it will take for pitcher Nolan Ryan to go from retirement (this year) into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1998). ...Ghost -- a bad movie that a lot of people will like. It's got suspense, comedy, a big chase and a little sex. It has Demi Moore, pert and intense, every emotion acutely aquiver in fine Debra Winger fashion. But though director Jerry Zucker wants his necrophiliac romance to be sensitive, he pumps up its feelings fortissimo so the dimmest viewer will get the point. And in its vision of death on earth, Ghost is exasperatingly capricious...
