...Mindy). No surprise, then, that McNally's play, a bedroom debate for two characters, is now a superior sitcom pilot, with lots of brisk banter and a wacky supporting cast. Setting: West Side luncheonette. Owner: a menschy Greek (Hector Elizondo). Waitresses: & sleep-around Cora (Kate Nelligan) and drab, acid Nedda (Jane Morris). Mood: strenuously genial. Take on New York: it's a hard place, but ya gotta...
...Journey into Night) Quintero. Although he had never done an opera before, and had seen only half a dozen in his life, Director Quintero somehow managed to absorb most of the stagy, stiff-kneed mannerisms of traditional opera productions. In spite of the singing of Soprano Elaine Malbin (Nedda) and the acting of Tenor Joseph Mordino (Canio), Pagliaci nearly fell flat for want of action and poor lighting. Even so, Director Adler proved his point that television deserves opera. Next in the series: Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame; GianCarlo Menotti's untitled opera, specially commissioned...
Besides Cho-Cho-San, last week she sang the leading role of Nedda in Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, an opera she had never seen. This winter she will be soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. As for ambitions to sing at the Met, chronically deaf to Negro voices, Camilla Williams says simply: "All opera singers aspire...
